Bringing great music to the Kingwood/Humble/Atascocita area
February, 2011 marked the first concert with Kris Chapman as the Pops' new resident conductor and found the orchestra walking along the Great White Way to sample the very best of musical theatre. The Pops poured out lyrical hits from the Great American Songbook, including Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma and Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, contrasting them with more modern fare, like the jazz rhythms of Chicago and the quirky, but moving Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. Special guest Elizabeth Borik received a standing ovation for her evocative rendition of George Gershwin's Summertime. The Pops' audience was transported back to revolutionaly war France with the powerful Les Miserables, describing the loves and suffering of individuals caught up in dramatic historical events. Ms. Borik rejoined the Pops for another Berstein number, Glitter and Be Gay from his opera Candide and the lovely I Could Have Danced All Night, a hit for the team of Fredrick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner. Emcee Bob Schorr kept the audience laughing (and, sometimes, groaning at his puns) and, of course, there was no holding back the brass section on Meredith Wilson's 76 Trombones.
Soprano Elizabeth Borik is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan. She holds a Master in Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Houston and a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Butler University in Indianapolis. Ms. Borik has appeared on stage with the Houston, Indianapolis, and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestras and has extensive music theatre experience, including roles in Company, Into the Woods, Phantom, and Camelot.
